Gold plated jewellery is widely popular because it’s almost impossible to tell real gold from gold plated just by looking at it.

Gold plating is a process where a layer of gold is bonded onto a base metal. Plating is quite common in the jewellery world, with gold and rhodium being two popular types (we also make rhodium plated pieces, and they will be launched soon – stay tuned).

With time (loooong time, and a lot of use), this gold plated layer will fade away to reveal the base metal underneath. Once this happens, it's time to replace the jewellery piece (or have it plated again). Keep in mind that the only gold that will not tarnish with time is solid gold & this comes with a hefty price tag. All other gold will lose its shine over time, the longevity of your piece will manly depend on the care you take of it.

In summary, if you love gold jewellery, want to wear trendy pieces, and grow your collection at an affordable price, gold plated jewellery is the perfect option for you! :)

Our tips for long lasting pieces:

  1. Keep your pieces well stored when they're not being worn. We recommend storing them in a jewellery box to avoid dust collection (if you don't have one, jewellery pouches or even ziplock bags will do – this is one of the reasons why all our pieces come in a beautiful satin pouch, so they can last longer in your collection).
  2. Avoid contact with perfume and lotions. The oils in products such as perfume, moisturiser, fake tan, sunscreen, etc, over time can harm the plating of your products.
  3. Remove your pieces when doing chores. The chemicals in soaps, detergents and cleaners can impact the plating.
  4. Avoid contact with chlorinated or salty water. Although our pieces are water resistant, we recommend taking them off before swimming in pools, hot tubs or the sea.
  5. Keep them clean. Our body oils and sweat can impact the plating, so cleaning your pieces regularly is important to prolong its life. Our cleaning cloth is a great option if you want something quick and easy to maintain your pieces clean. Avoid brushing or rubbing the plated jewellery.
